Student Therapists - Counselling, Placement Support & Difficulties in Training
How I can help-
I work with students as a training therapist. I find this to be a most rewarding role. I invite students therapists to contact me for a discussion about their training therapy. You are at the start of a life-changing journey!
I was fortunate to have be trained by a group of amazing people who nurtured me and my cohort through our five years. Over the past ten years, regrettably I have worked with a few student counsellors who have encountered difficulties progressing their training. Some people experience much more challenging and sometimes very distressing times. This is why I decided to help people who get caught in training.
Typical difficulties include:
Psychological support – if you encounter such difficulties, you may be under extreme pressure and feel very alone-I understand how devastating disruptions to training can be.
Signposting to appropriate routes for support, including training and career progression – it’s important to understand your options and take the best steps forward. This is certainly not a one size fits all matter. You will already have invested a huge amount of time, effort and money in your chosen path, now is not the time to let complexity and confusion misdirect you.
Sometimes there are ruptures that cause huge challenges. I’ll help you with practical interventions such as ensuring that you have bridging supervision and provision of student placements. It is essential that you understand the importance of having appropriate and effective supervision, placements and personal therapy during your training.
For a few people, the route through training to qualification and accreditation is a monumental challenge that may take years. I can’t guarantee that I can offer you a way through the kinds of difficulties mentioned above, but I will do my best to support you.

Typical difficulties include:
- Progression difficulties, for example, when a training organisation ceases trading or changes the program during the course.
- Difficulties arising in training, supervision or placements.
- Breaks in training due to ill health or other life challenges.
- Complex challenges arising in training, for example, discrimination and interpersonal difficulties.

PlacementsThrough our Garden Clinic based in Brentwood Essex, we offer a limited number of student volunteering placements. These are only available to students working face to face with adults.
Although we are not affiliated to or accredited by an awarding body, we aim to ensure that we follow ethical guidelines that maintain the safety of both you and your clients. Where possible, we will liaise with your training organisation and on request from them we will send a report about your time with us. Placement supervision is available by negotiation if your training organisation doesn't offer this. Please contact us for further information and prospectus. |
When things go wrongIf you are having difficulty in training, it is essential that you raise the matter with your course tutor.
Unfortunately, on rare occasions, concerns may not be appropriately addressed. In this event we suggest that you take the matter to the course leader or senior management of the organisation. Familliarise yourself with your training organisation's internal grievance and complaints procedure, Follow their published proceedure to the letter and keep records of what has occurred. In the event that you have an unsatisfactory outcome, (and don't let this get dragged out) you should take the matter to the awarding body and to the accrediting university without delay. Supervision & TrainingFor students whose training has been interrupted. We can guide you to alternative routes by assessing your training options and we'll ensure that you are directed to appropriate therapy, practical support and supervision.
It is essential that you make the best decision for your future. It may help to seek advice from organisations such as BACP: https://www.bacp.co.uk/ |
